ACTUALIZE OR DIE

In the following essay I intend to describe my personal impressions on the subject “interactive environments in foreign language teaching”, that belongs to the curriculum of the TEFL in Schools degree of the Universidad Pública de Navarra.

In the first place, I’d like to stress the positive feeling I have about the relaxed atmosphere created in class, because, in my opinion, it was one of the aspects that favoured motivation and interest towards the contents, and in the same way, towards the completion of the main objectives of the subject. To achieve this positive atmosphere I have to thank our teacher Marian in the first place, who, as we already knew from previous years, lent us a helping hand from the first moment, and has been really accessible, making us an active part of the learning process in a very pleasant way. Secondly, I would like to thank my colleagues, who have also contributed with their participation, help, understanding, and sense of humour, my colleague Amaia in particular, who I’ve worked with from the beginning.

Talking now about the contents in general, I feel very satisfied, because even if I had a certain knowledge about managing a blog or creating a Google Docs account, I have learnt several tricks and so, I have boosted my skills towards these tools. Both the activities with Hot Potatoes and Web Quests I consider really practical, as they are useful tools to create activities in a not so distant future.

In retrospect, I think the least pleasant part of the subject was the reading of documents about Computer Assisted Language Learning and their following presentation, because in my opinion they were too dense. Even so, the objective of grasping the general idea of the evolution and concepts was achieved in the presentations.

Another point I would like to highlight is the evaluation criteria. Personally, I consider the marking system to be correctly distributed and focused on the reality of the programme.

To conclude, I would like to take the opportunity to give my point of view on New Technologies in general, mostly because I think we are on the verge of a new era in respect to education. Being ready and having these very useful tools handy are going to be the key for our success in our teaching, even though it’s true that it’s going to be difficult to keep up being on the edge of technology with this enormous boom in innovation. I often have the feeling that technology is robbing a small part of our human side, even though I cannot ignore the evidence of its need in this ever changing world our students are going to grow in.
